Yet, as wonderful as the surrounding area is, the town of Sarlat is surely the jewel in the crown of the Perigord. The cathedral of Saint Sacerdos, the beautiful 16th Century buildings around the Place de la Liberte and the narrow medieval streets form the backdrop to a town bursting with life, and yet simultaneously peaceful and at ease. We have one of the most famous markets in France, over 30 restaurants, countless cafes and bars, and the most marvellous friendly family atmosphere. Add to that a superb climate and plenty of parks and small squares with room to wander in peace and quiet. More than any town I have been to, Sarlat seems to be whatever you want it to be. I know that sounds like romantic nonsense, but all I can say is that within 18 months of first coming to Sarlat Wendy and I had sold everything we had in the UK and had bought Le Jardin. David
